Beautiful Exteriors Blog | Expert Tips for a Thriving Landscape
Whether you’ve recently installed new plants, trees, or fresh sod, proper watering is the key to long-term health and beauty. At Beautiful Exteriors, we see it all the time, landscapes that fail not from lack of love, but from lack of water in those critical first weeks.
Why Watering Matters
1. New Roots Are Fragile
Freshly planted materials have shallow, developing root systems that need consistent moisture to survive. A dry day or two in the beginning can be enough to set them back or even kill them.
2. Water Supports Growth & Nutrient Uptake
Water helps nutrients move through the soil and into the plant, fueling everything from root growth to flowering and greening.
3. Sod Must Stay Moist to Root Properly
For sod to bond with the soil beneath, it needs constant moisture. If it dries out, roots won’t establish, and your lawn will struggle or die off in patches.
How to Water Correctly For New Plants & Shrubs
Immediately After Planting:
Water thoroughly to help soil settle and eliminate air pockets.
First 2 Weeks:
Water daily to keep the root zone moist (not soggy).
Use a slow, deep watering method (like drip irrigation or soaker hoses).
Weeks 3–6:
Water every 2–3 days. Check soil 1–2 inches down, if it’s dry, it’s time to water.
After 6 Weeks:
Taper off to 1–2 times per week depending on weather and plant type.
Drip irrigation works well for new plants
Pro Tip: Water early in the morning to prevent evaporation and minimize disease risk.

Check moisture by lifting a corner of the sod it should be wet underneath.
Days 1–14:
Water 2–3 times daily (morning, mid-day, early evening if very hot). Keep sod constantly moist.
Weeks 3–4:
Water once daily in the morning. Begin to ease off frequency.
After 4 Weeks:
Water 2–3 times per week or as needed depending on rainfall and season.
Pro Tip: Avoid mowing new sod until it’s rooted, about 3 weeks after install.
